I might be the only one, but I never thought my first trip to Modern Woodmen Park would be to "play" baseball . I had been to JOD several times, but have yet to make it to a game since the switch. I just never figured I would get to play at the new JOD.

I mean this honestly... I organize this league for you guys and hearing stuff like this makes it all worth it!
This is the most important thing I think I've ever done. Seriously.

I think we all hope this game will motivate guys to come out and play on a regular basis next year. Tonight's game was a huge success in every sense, from the play, to the finances to purchase new equipment, to the goodwill we created by running the food drive.
Who else besides those of us at Veto's house tonight saw the Channel 4 and 8 news? We all cheered when the lady on Channel 4 said they have a link to our website from theirs. To all you new visitors who may view this, I say welcome and hope to see the new faces next year.
Also, don't forget to check out this Wednesday's Dispatch, as John Marx (who many of you saw there) will be doing a piece on our league.

I had an awesome time. It was a surreal feeling warming up on that field. While we didn't play as many games during the 2008 season as the 2006, overall it was a much larger success. Not once did we have to worry about our field being used by another team/league. Only on a few occasiosn did we not have enough of a turnout to play. I think we only got rained out 4 games - Douglas is the best at shruging off water. And MOST IMPORTANTLY, there weren't any bees, wasps, or snakes on our infield. Heck, this season went so deep that we had to alter our Sunday game times for the Bears. That's never happened in Veto League history. Also, I'd like to point out that we had 42 VLB debuts this year, with 7 of those guys playing regularly enough to make the night game roster. You couldn't ask for a better summer from any other sandlot baseball league. Thanks, Veto.

Boys, I was so glad to be able to share that experience with you. Thank you for being there.
YOU guys make this league go. I, and many others, do our best to facilitate the organization of it, but the rest is left up to dedication and desire to refuse to give up something we love.
I said it in the tunnel, and I mean it, that was the greatest accomplishment of my life, and Veto League Baseball is my greatest creation. But I take greatest pleasure in bringing together through baseball over 270 different people from different backgrounds and talent levels, different home lives and careers.
That's the one thing I don't want to get lost about this league. Think of all the people you have met while playing. I've had so many people tell me "Hey, I saw some guy wearing a Veto League shirt the other day." I consider each of you my close friends.
Thank YOU for your dedication and passion to keep this league alive. There are times when I get so stressed out that I wonder if I am going to get it done, but you were all there to pick me up through this Night Game -- the biggest thing we've ever put on.
Let's not limit our contact to the baseball season. If anybody ever wants to chill -- perhaps get some wings and watch a game -- let's get that done.
Thank you all for a great season -- a season that began with the message board poll question "Will the VLB play in 2008?" I think we answered that question loudly and proudly. And we showed that we have guys dedicated enough to this league that we can manage to come back from a full season off.
I appreciate your gratitude. And I also thank you.

Thank you Matt Veto. Without you, none of this would have been possible.
Thank you to everyone who has ever participated in VLB. Without you, none of this would have been possible.
Thank you to the staff at JOD (I mean MWP). Without those of you that helped out, none of this would have been possible.
Now, for those of you that read John Marx's article. I thought it was well written, but I was hoping that it was going to be centered around the VLB more than it was. I also was hoping that he would hit my point that the VLB gives people who have never met before, a chance to go out, have fun, and be a kid again.

Sure was an amazing night, and a fantastic season. Veto, can you get us into Wrigley next year? Or better, Miller Park? Hehe. I was laughing the rest of the night just remembering Barton firing that ball into right field. Whens the Veto League Bowling season start? Oh and did somebody say wings? I'm in.

Just jumping on top of the pile here to thank everyone involved once again. Especially Veto, who was never just "too tired" or something to come out, lug equipment both ways, call bunches of people, etc. Without him many of us wouldn't even know each other, let alone have the good memories like Elle mentioned above (although frankly I thought JP actually throwing the kid out was funnier).
I'm always up for beers, wings, etc too. Have a good offseason!

frankly I thought JP actually throwing the kid out was funnier. It was the defensive play of my life, and yet, I get no credit for it.

Kudos to Joey C for dropping the ball to save the day!
Those two got the loudest cheer of the night. Credit goes to Kiel on that one.
By the way, there was apparently a miscount on the hot dogs and we have a boat load of hot dogs left. I propose a Veto League encore party to finish off the buns (bring hot dogs) and chips.
And I imagine we'll finish off any beer that comes to the party, too.
Any takers?

I'll be in milwaukee this weekend to watch the Cubs knock the Brew crew out of the playoffs. But I'm up for it anytime after that.

Boat load of hot dogs left, bring more hot dogs? Sounds like fun though, let me know when.
